Energizers
What is Energizers about ?
Everyone has different learning styles. While some people may be comfortable sitting through a full day event and have no problem paying attention, for others their attention may begin to wane after an extended period of sitting still. This may lead to less engagement in the main content and activities of the event, and can also cause irritability and even conflict amongst participants. Regular breaks are useful, but it’s also beneficial to host a group activity to get everyone to work together and/or have a bit of fun to help them feel more relaxed and bond as a group.

Online
Energisers can work online, and give the facilitator an opportunity to be creative in a different way, although they can feel more awkward at first than in a face-to-face situation. The simplest option is to ask everyone to stand up and copy an activity - for example a stretch or a dance move. Be aware that any game involving everyone making sounds is less likely to transfer successfully to an online setting. Another option is to give everyone a task to do, explain it, and then give them five minutes to do it. This could be a silly creative task (such as making a small sculpture out of objects in their room), a physical activity, or anything your imagination comes up with! More interactive options include games that use the windows in the video conferencing platform - for example, trying to arrange each person in their individual window so that it looks like they are touching hands, or passing an object between them. The silly hats and accessories feature on Zoom can also be used for this kind of game.
